BURNLEY residents are being warned to think carefully before employing workmen who knock on the door offering to carry out work.
Homeowners in Gannow and Coal Clough have been charged "over the odds" in recent weeks by workmen who carried out very little or no work at all.

Insp. Martin Melvin said: "We would always advise people to be wary of anyone who turns up unannounced offering to do work. After all, you don't know them, you don't know the quality of workmanship and you don't know if what they are proposing to charge is fair.

"If you do need building work doing, it is far better to ask around for recommendations or get quotes from a number of reputable companies rather than rely on someone who turns up on your doorstep out of the blue."

He issued the following advisc:
• Never let strangers into your home.

• Never feel pressurised into having work done by unannounced callers.

• If you feel work is required, ensure you get quotes from at least three reputable tradesmen.

• Never pay for work upfront.

• If you are unhappy with the work done, contact your local Trading Standards Department.

If you suspect the caller is bogus, contact Burnley Police on 0845 1253545.
