A MAN has appeared in court charged with rape and robbery in the grounds of Burnley College.
Anthony Shaw (20), of Hart Street, Burnley, was remanded in custody after making a brief appearance at Burnley Magistrates' Court in relation to an incident on Monday, which took place between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Shaw's case was sent to Burnley Crown Court where he will appear on November 3rd.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to the incident in which the defendant is alleged to have threatened a 29-year-old woman with a claw hammer before assaulting her. She is said to have handed him a ring and both of them headed towards Shorey Bank where a row took place.

Officers still need to hear from anyone who could assist their investigation – particularly anyone who may have seen the man and woman or overheard them shouting.

Information can be passed to detectives at Burnley CID on 472144 or to Crimestoppers, free and anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
