Firefighters save man's life in Latham Street blaze
FIREFIGHTERS have saved a man's life by dragging him from a burning house.
The man had fallen asleep before the blaze started in Latham Street and was unconscious when fire crews rescued him at 1-15 p.m. yesterday
He is believed to have suffered burns and smoke inhalation.
Another man who lives at the house managed to escape the fire but was also treated by paramedics for the effects of smoke. Both men were taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.
Three fire crews, from Burnley, Padiham and Nelson, rushed to the scene, and used two hose reels to put out the blaze and ventilation units to clear smoke.
The ground floor of the house was severely damaged by the fire.
Watch manager Pete Ashworth from Burnley Fire Station said the men had fallen asleep after drinking and had accidentally started the fire with an unattended cigarette.
He said: "Drinking and smoking, and drinking and cooking, do not go together. People need to be very careful. There was no working smoke alarm and this could have been a lot worse as this sort of fire can spread in a matter of seconds."
